Lutheran Medical Center, a 476 bed hospital and the Lutheran Family Health Centers provide over 600,000 visits and over 50,000 dental visits annually to culturally diverse communities in southwest Brooklyn, NY. Lutheran Family Health Center Network, governed by the Sunset Park Health Council, Inc. is responsible for the administration of the dental programs. A Federally Qualified Health Center, one of the original CHCs established in 1967 remains the largest and one of the most successful in the nation. For over a decade, the Department of Dental Medicine has strengthened its commitment to care for underserved communities by pioneering and forging collaborative alliances and partnerships with community health centers and other public agencies that serve as catalysts for developing exciting models for dental residency training.
As a Lutheran Medical Center dental resident, you would be assigned to a Community Health Center within the Lutheran Healthcare Network for an entire year or two of clinical training and provide oral health care to the most vulnerable populations in the community. Distance Learning technologies link residents and faculty in a 200 hour live, interactive advanced education didactic curriculum on a weekly basis and online forums are utilized for literature review and educational discussions of dental disciplines. This assures educational equity across clinical training sites and throughout the program.
